Ariana Grande Poised for “Wicked” Lead
Rumor has it that Ariana Grande, 24, will soon be taking over the lead as Elphaba in the current Broadway run of “Wicked”. The graduate of Nickelodeon shows, with recent hit music albums and much touring, was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2017. Her videos have reached billions of views.
A small show at a close-knit venue in January of 2016 exemplifies Grande’s passion for musical theatre and her tight relationship with her past musical director, Jason Robert Brown, who worked with her on the album Dangerous Woman. The musical “Wicked”, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman, hit Broadway in 2003 with Tony-winner Idina Menzel in the lead of Elphaba. Casts have changed, but “Wicked” rolls on as Broadway’s 7th-longest-running show; and it has toured around the world. Holzman’s book for the show is very different from the 1995 novel that was its source: Gregory Maguire’s Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a re-telling of The Wizard of Oz.
Lovers of Broadway will be very interested to see what new qualities Grande brings to the role of Elphaba. Find Ariana Grande on Instagram, and read about the multiple charities she backs.
